During this time of year, I always am a bit disgruntled about how insurance changes affect the elderly. There are insurance companies who don’t clearly state how their coverage differs from Medicare. They imply that their plans cover “things that Medicare does not.”  While in some cases they may in fact cover items that Medicare doesn’t, in order to do so, they also (more often than not) don’t cover many other things that Medicare does. Too often, we see elderly patients who don’t have a clear understanding of what is covered and what is not until it’s too late. They end up in a situation where they need a service that is not provided. In this time of insurance change, please take extra time with your elderly loved ones to help them make the best decisions they can regarding the coverage they choose. It may be the greatest gift you can give them for the holiday season.
